Holger Rune kicked off his BNP Paribas Nordic Open journey with a confident victory, defeating Marton Fucsovics 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday in the heart of Stockholm. This win propels Rune into his third consecutive ATP Tour quarter-final, where he will face Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who secured his place with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Miomir Kecmanovic.

The young Danish star, who captured his inaugural hard-court title at the Stockholm ATP 250 in 2022, is on the hunt for his second trophy in 2025 after previously claiming victory on clay in Barcelona. A win here would elevate him above Casper Ruud to secure the 11th spot in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin.

Rune enhanced his record to 2-0 against Fucsovics in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series, navigating a challenging final stretch to serve out the victory on center court. Impressively, he saved eight out of nine break points, with Fucsovics’ only break occurring at 5-2 during the first set.

“He really stepped up his game towards the end, so I had to match his intensity,” Rune commented on his opponent’s late rally. “I knew it wouldn’t be easy to finish the match, but I’m thrilled with how I played. It was an exciting contest for both of us.”

In another thrilling match earlier on Thursday, fourth seed Ugo Humbert edged past Matteo Berrettini with a score of 7-6(5), 6-3. The French player capitalized on both break points he faced while maintaining a solid service game without conceding any break opportunities.

Advancing to his fourth quarter-final of the season, Humbert aims to maintain his perfect 4-0 record at this stage as he prepares to battle Lorenzo Sonego. He’s been on fire indoors, boasting an impressive 11-1 record in his last 12 matches, following his run to the Paris Rolex Masters final last year and his Marseille title earlier this season.
