STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Holger Rune announced on Sunday that he will be sidelined for an extended period due to an Achilles injury, which necessitates surgical intervention.
The No. 11-ranked Rune exited the court in visible pain during his semifinal match at the Nordic Open in Stockholm on Saturday, having to withdraw against Ugo Humbert while leading 6-4, 2-2.
“It’s going to be some time before I’m back on the court. This is hard for me. I was truly enjoying my time out there in Stockholm, and the thought of missing that energy for a while is tough to bear,” he shared on Instagram.
The 22-year-old Dane revealed that his Achilles is “completely broken in the proximal area” and he is scheduled for surgery next week.
Aside from this setback, Rune has impressively reached three Grand Slam quarterfinals and achieved a career-high ranking of No. 4.
