It was a bittersweet Sunday for Novak Djokovic in Miami, as he narrowly missed out on claiming his 100th title, losing in two closely contested sets to Jakub Mensik. Despite the loss, the Grand Slam legend displayed immense sportsmanship, lauding the talented 19-year-old Czech player he has nurtured for years.

“While I’m never thrilled about losing, he’s one of the few opponents I’d be happy to lose to,” Djokovic expressed to the press. “I’ve watched him play since he was just 15 or 16 and invited him for some training sessions. Seeing his growth and evolution is truly amazing.”

Mensik, in return, has expressed deep gratitude for Djokovic’s mentorship. Observers could easily catch the mutual respect and admiration as the two interacted post-match.

Djokovic noted that he recognized Mensik’s exceptional talent early on. “I observed his potential three or four years ago and knew he was destined to be among the world’s elite,” he remarked. “I’m thrilled to see him harness that potential. His game is well-rounded; his serve is both powerful and precise, allowing him to secure many free points.”

On that exciting Miami Sunday, Mensik delivered an exceptional serving display against the world’s top returner, showcasing that he possesses more than just a lethal serve.

Djokovic highlighted the significant strides Mensik has made with his forehand. Under intense pressure from Djokovic, the teen’s strokes held up strong as the seasoned veteran sought a pathway to a third set.

“His backhand is also impressive – the Czech players are known for their exquisite backhands. But his forehand has improved tremendously. And for a tall player, his movement is quite impressive; he slides and moves really well.”

ADMIRABLE FIGHTING SPIRIT

Djokovic shared how he was captivated by Mensik’s fighting spirit during the 2022 junior finals, where the young Czech battled through intense cramps against Bruno Kuzuhara. Following that match, Djokovic reached out and invited him for training, leading to their continuing connection.

“I was impressed by his determination while he was struggling in that final. He showcased a big game and seemed like a genuinely nice guy. I had my management reach out to his, and thankfully we built a rapport. We’ve had several training sessions together, and interestingly, his current physio used to work with me. We share numerous connections. I see a bright future for him; he has immense potential.”
