Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten exorcised last year’s Nitto ATP Finals disappointment in spectacular fashion on Saturday afternoon in Turin.

A year after falling short in the semi-finals during their debut at this prestigious event, Heliovaara and Patten decisively claimed a 6-4, 6-3 victory against the Italian duo of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori. Their exceptional performance overwhelmed the home crowd at Inalpi Arena, showcasing their prowess both individually and as a team.

“We had to push ourselves yesterday, but we came prepared for this semi-final,” remarked Heliovaara. “We truly enjoyed our time on the court. Our experience showed, and we executed our game plan magnificently.”

Patten’s progression to the final underscores Great Britain’s stronghold in this year’s doubles competition at the Nitto ATP Finals. He and Heliovaara will face an all-British team in the championship clash: the top seeds and Year-End ATP Doubles No. 1 team, Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool, or Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski.

Heliovaara and Patten capitalized on their lone break point early in the first set at 1-1, converting at 30/40 to seize control of the match. They followed up with a decisive break in the third game of the second set. Patten, who celebrated an engagement to his partner Ellie Stone earlier in the week, faced a moment of tension when he served a double fault at 3-2, 40/30. However, he quickly recovered with a confident serve to clinch the game.

This proved to be the last challenging moment for Heliovaara and Patten on their serve, as they ultimately closed out the match in just 76 minutes, winning an impressive 87 percent (20/23) of their points on first serves, according to Infosys ATP Stats. They now lead the Lexus ATP Head2Head series against Bolelli and Vavassori, 3-1, including a victory in this year’s Australian Open semi-finals.

“It’s all about the practice. There’s no magic formula,” Patten explained about their returning strategy. “They’re both exceptional servers. We’ve faced challenges returning against them previously. Sometimes luck is on your side. It’s just relentless hard work and repetition.”

The seasoned 36-year-old Heliovaara and 29-year-old Patten are now set to compete for their eighth tour-level title together, aiming for their second indoor championship this year after their victory at the Rolex Paris Masters earlier this month.
