After a promising return to the Rolex Paris Masters, Grigor Dimitrov’s journey came to an unexpected halt as he withdrew from his anticipated second-round match against Daniil Medvedev.

The 34-year-old Bulgarian, who had been out of commission for three months due to a pectoral injury, celebrated a triumphant comeback on Monday against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. However, just before his 12th face-off with Medvedev (currently leading 8-3), Dimitrov encountered a shoulder issue that forced him to retire.

Dimitrov had previously shown resilience at Wimbledon in July, where he led World No. 1 Jannik Sinner by two sets before a sudden pectoral muscle pain sidelined him, marking his fifth retirement at a major event.

A former World No. 3 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Dimitrov spent several months recuperating before making a long-awaited reappearance in Paris, a venue where he reached the finals in 2023. On Tuesday, he made a special appearance alongside Nicolas Mahut during the Frenchman’s final doubles match.

It All Adds Up

Unfortunately for fans, Dimitrov was not cleared for singles action on Wednesday. In his absence, the match between Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Arthur Cazaux was promoted from Court 2 to the main Court 1.

It All Adds Up

Pushing forward, Medvedev now advances to the third round in Paris for the first time since his 2021 finals appearance and will face either Lorenzo Musetti or Lorenzo Sonego next.
