WASHINGTON — In a remarkable display of generosity, tennis sensation Coco Gauff has pledged $100,000 to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) to establish scholarships aimed at student-athletes competing in tennis at historically Black colleges and universities.

The newly launched Coco Gauff Scholarship Program, announced on Tuesday, will be managed by UNCF.

“My family’s connection to HBCUs runs deep, tracing back to my great-great-grandfather. From aunts and uncles to cousins, HBCUs have profoundly influenced our identity,” Gauff expressed. “I’m truly passionate about partnering with UNCF to create pathways for tennis student-athletes. As a young Black athlete, I know how crucial it is to witness those who look like me thriving in education and sports.”

The 20-year-old Floridian recently claimed victory at the 2023 U.S. Open singles championship and secured the women’s doubles title at the 2024 French Open.

Currently, she ranks No. 3 in the WTA standings.

“Coco’s unwavering dedication exemplifies her commitment to both education and athletics, inspiring emerging student-athletes to chase their aspirations,” remarked Maurice Jenkins Jr., UNCF’s executive vice president and chief development officer. “This generous contribution underscores the vital need to uplift our young leaders, providing them with the essential resources to excel both on and off the court.”
