Legendary French tennis player Gael Monfils has officially announced that he will retire from professional tennis following the 2026 season.

Since his debut in 2004, Monfils has charmed fans with his dynamic playing style and engaging personality, securing 13 career titles and achieving a remarkable No. 6 world ranking in 2016. In a heartfelt social media post on Wednesday, he spoke about his decision to step away from the sport next year.

“I first picked up a racket at the tender age of two and a half, starting my professional journey at 18,” he shared. “As I celebrate my 39th birthday this past month, it’s time to announce that I will be bidding farewell to professional tennis after next season.”

“Transforming my passion into a profession is a privilege that I’ve treasured throughout my 21 years on court. While this sport has immensely shaped my life, I am at peace with my decision to end my career in 2026.”

Even deep into his professional career, Monfils continues to be a formidable contender, holding an 18-15 record for 2025, which includes a title victory in Auckland earlier this year. In his announcement, he expressed gratitude to his team, fans, the French Tennis Federation, fellow players, and especially his family—his wife, WTA star Elina Svitolina, and their daughter Skai.

“When you’re deeply in love with something, every moment feels too precious to say goodbye,” Monfils reflected. “However, I believe turning 40 will be the right moment for me. Of course, winning one last title would be a dreamy conclusion, but my true focus for the upcoming year is straightforward.”

“I want to savor each moment and approach every match as if it’s my last.”
