In a notable clash at the Citi Open, Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo fell to fourth seed Ben Shelton from the USA in the third round, with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-2.
Shelton showcased his serving prowess, racking up 16 aces compared to Diallo’s five, dominating with an impressive 86 percent success rate on service points.
Exhibiting a strong defensive performance, the American didn’t face a single break point while successfully breaking Diallo three times out of four opportunities.
Diallo, who was seeded 15th in Washington, entered the tournament boasting a career-high ranking of No. 35.
He is set to compete next at the National Bank Open in Toronto, where he holds the 30th seed and will benefit from a first-round bye.
Later on Thursday, Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Quebec, took to the court against top seed Jessica Pegula in the women’s third round.
