Gabriel Diallo’s inaugural Grand Slam outing as a seeded player came to an early conclusion.

The Montreal talent faced a straight-set defeat, falling 7-5, 6-3, 7-5 to Spain’s Jaume Munar in the second round of the US Open on Thursday night. This result marks him as the first among the trio of Canadian men competing in the tournament to be eliminated.

Similar to his previous matches against Taylor Fritz in the National Bank Open and Jannik Sinner in Cincinnati, Diallo struggled with unforced errors, amassing 49 compared to Munar’s mere 13.

After dropping his serve early in the third set, the No. 31 seed rebounded in the following game, showing resilience and even gaining some momentum in this closely contested match.

However, a crucial unforced error in the second-to-last game proved costly, as Diallo overhit a backhand, resulting in a third service loss in the set.

Munar swiftly wrapped up the match with precision, decisively ending the spirited rally of the final set with a quick 40-0 victory.

In other Canadian men’s matches, No. 27 seed Denis Shapovalov triumphed over France’s Valentin Royer with a scoreline of 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. Meanwhile, No. 25 Felix Auger-Aliassime is scheduled to face Russia’s Roman Safiullin later today.
