Felix Auger-Aliassime has some fellow Canadians joining him in Round 2 at Wimbledon.
Gabriel Diallo also made it through to the next round at the All England Club on Tuesday, as his opponent Benjamin Bonzi retired during the intense fifth set of their first-round clash.
Hailing from Montreal, Diallo was leading 1-6, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3, 3-1 when Bonzi decided to call it quits. The reasons for Bonzi’s exit remain unclear.
The 24-year-old star will next face either Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego or the 29th-seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry from Argentina.
Last year, Diallo also reached the second round in his Wimbledon debut. His best performance in a Grand Slam came with a journey to the third round at the 2024 US Open.
Auger-Aliassime and Diallo stand as the sole Canadians left in the singles draws at Wimbledon, following the first-round exits of Denis Shapovalov, Bianca Andreescu, and Leylah Fernandez.
On Thursday, Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski will kick off her campaign alongside Brazilian partner Luisa Stefani, entering as the No. 2 seed in women’s doubles.
