The Miami Open draw seemed promising for Ben Shelton, until a remarkable 20-year-old named Coleman Wong stepped onto the court.
Ranked No.182, the young tennis sensation from Hong Kong pulled off a stunning upset over 13th-seeded Shelton, clinching victory with his third match point in a nail-biting tiebreak. This incredible win marks Wong as the lowest-ranked player to reach the Miami round of 32 in a decade.
“I always believe in my ability to perform on big stages… I faced significant challenges during the COVID period,” Wong expressed passionately on court after his exhilarating victory. “Not playing for a year and a half was tough, but thanks to my supportive team, I’m here today. This victory is dedicated to you, Hong Kong!”
With a win over Daniel Altmaier in his opening match, Wong became the first player from Hong Kong to achieve a Masters 1000 victory. Next up, he will face Lucky Loser Adam Walton.
Displaying fierce determination and flair throughout the match, Wong surged to a 5-2 lead in the final set, but Shelton, refusing to back down, fought back to equalize.
Wong stood at the brink of victory with two match points while Shelton served at 5-6, yet the American responded with phenomenal winners to stay in contention.
Ultimately, in the dramatic tiebreak, Wong seized his third match point, securing his place in history.
