After securing the Swiss Indoors Basel title, Joao Fonseca dedicated his victory to his mother, acknowledging her profound impact on his journey during a heartfelt post-match address. The #NextGenATP star triumphed over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, marking a significant milestone as the third-youngest ATP 500 champion since the series began in 2009.
“My mum has been my constant companion since I was young. Starting at 11, she’s been my travel buddy, so I dedicate this title to her,” Fonseca expressed following his impressive 86-minute match.
Fonseca had previously celebrated at the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF last December, with his parents cheering him from the stands. Although his family wasn’t present for his entire Basel campaign, they swiftly changed their travel plans after he defeated Jaume Munar, arriving just an hour before the championship showdown.
“My parents just flew in from Brazil. They were originally heading to Paris but altered their itinerary to be here. It’s incredible to have them with me for this monumental title,” Fonseca said, filled with gratitude.
After securing his second tour-level trophy in Basel, Fonseca leaped into the stands, embracing his parents, uncles, and coach in a moment of pure joy. He is now poised to reach a career-high No. 28 in the PIF ATP Rankings, bringing his season record to an impressive 25-15 as highlighted by the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
