Flavio Cobolli stunned the cheering Munich crowd on Saturday by defeating reigning champion Alexander Zverev, securing his spot in the final of the BMW Open by Bitpanda.

The 23-year-old Italian delivered an outstanding performance, clinching a decisive 6-3, 6-3 victory against Zverev, who is ranked No. 3 in the PIF ATP Rankings. According to Infosys ATP Stats, Cobolli racked up 32 winners while conceding just eight points on his first serve, marking his first win against a Top-5 player.

“This was one of my best matches ever, especially playing against one of my closest friends on the Tour,” Cobolli expressed. Despite trailing Zverev 1-2 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head matchups, he added, “Him and his team are fantastic, making this matchup challenging. However, I felt that I delivered one of my best performances today, and I couldn’t be happier.”

With his 69-minute victory, Cobolli joined Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as the only players this season to make finals on both clay and hard courts. Following him, American star Ben Shelton topped Slovakian qualifier Alex Molcan 6-3, 6-4 to secure his second consecutive appearance in the Munich final.

Cobolli quickly established his dominance in the semi-final, utilizing aggressive groundstrokes to move Zverev, a three-time Munich champion, all over the court while showcasing extraordinary speed and precision. On the other hand, Zverev struggled to find his rhythm, even committing a pivotal double fault at the start of the second set, granting Cobolli a crucial break.

Now climbing to No. 13 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, Cobolli is on the hunt for his fourth ATP Tour title and third at the ATP 500 level. Before overcoming Zverev, he held a 1-16 record against Top-10 players, his only prior win coming when No. 9 Holger Rune retired in their Madrid match last year.

This defeat marks Zverev’s fourth straight semi-final loss, having previously been eliminated by Sinner at three consecutive ATP Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo.

In the second semi-final, Shelton displayed calmness and skill to eliminate World No. 166 Molcan, setting up another opportunity to claim the Munich trophy on Sunday. Shelton fell to Zverev in last year’s final and takes a 3-2 lead in their Lexus ATP Head2Head matchups into the final, having triumphed over Cobolli in all three encounters in 2025.

With this achievement, Shelton now makes his seventh appearance in an ATP Tour final and his fifth at the ATP 500 level, following title wins in Tokyo in 2023 and Dallas in February, where he defeated fellow American Taylor Fritz after saving three championship points. His semi-final victory in Munich ensures that he will remain the top American player in the rankings on Monday.

Shelton is also among the select few—only the fourth man born in the 2000s—to reach five ATP 500 title matches, marking the first time an American has made back-to-back finals on European clay since Jim Courier’s run at Roland Garros from 1991 to 1993.
