This is a moment we’ve eagerly anticipated.

From their rise as next-generation stars at the Next Gen ATP Finals to dominating the Grand Slam scene over the last two years, this moment culminates on Sunday. World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and No. 2 Jannik Sinner will face each other for the first time in Turin’s Inalpi Arena at the Nitto ATP Finals title match (6 p.m. CET/noon ET).

Echoing their dominance, Alcaraz and Sinner each dropped a mere 13 games in decisive semi-final victories on Saturday against Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alex de Minaur.

Alcaraz aims to cap off his incredible season with a personal-best ninth title and his inaugural victory at this season-ending event, just three days after securing the ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honor for the second consecutive time. However, he knows that nothing will come easy on Sunday.
“Facing Jannik is fantastic,” Alcaraz remarked while looking forward to the final. “Honestly, I wouldn’t mind who my opponent was, but having him in the final is special… I need to bring my A-game to win against him, and we are sure to elevate our levels, which will be thrilling for the audience.”

Sinner, who briefly claimed the No. 1 spot following his triumph at the Rolex Paris Masters, is chasing an undefeated title defense for the second consecutive year by aiming for his 10th win in Turin, extending his indoor winning streak to an impressive 31 matches.

This showdown is set against the backdrop of one of tennis’ most electric rivalries, one that is already drawing comparisons to legendary clashes like Borg-McEnroe, Sampras-Agassi, Federer-Nadal, and Djokovic-Nadal.

Having claimed four out of their five encounters this year, Sinner will surely relish the opportunity to finish 2025 with a meaningful victory in front of enthusiastic home fans. Yet, don’t expect Alcaraz to offer any room in what is poised to be an unforgettable showdown that will surely punctuate an extraordinary 2025 ATP Tour season.

Most Encounters Between Current or Former No. 1 Players in a Season…

Meetings Players Record Year
8 Djokovic vs. Federer 5-3 2015
7 McEnroe vs. Lendl 6-1 1984
6 Djokovic vs. Nadal 3-3 2013
6 McEnroe vs. Connors 6-0 1984
6 Borg vs. Connors 6-0 1979
6 Alcaraz vs. Sinner 4-1* 2025
* 6th meeting on Sunday

At just 24, Sinner is the youngest player to reach three consecutive Nitto ATP Finals title matches since Lleyton Hewitt (23) achieved the same feat in 2004. After holding serve on all 40 opportunities this week, Sinner joins Novak Djokovic (2018) as the only player to enter the final without being broken (since the statistics began being tracked in 1991). His last serve was only broken once by Ben Shelton in the Paris quarter-finals.

As he seeks to bridge the gap on his 5-10 deficit in their career meetings, let’s delve into their five match-ups in 2025…

Winner Event Score
Alcaraz US Open 62 36 61 64
Alcaraz Cincinnati 5-0 ret.
Sinner Wimbledon 46 64 64 64
Alcaraz R-Garros 46 67(4) 64 76(3) 76(10-2)
Alcaraz Rome 76(5) 61

In the post-match press conference, Sinner reflected on his semi-final victory, noting, “I’m genuinely thrilled to end my season here, making it to another final. It has been a remarkable year for me, and I can’t wait for tomorrow’s challenge. This is an opportunity to see where my game truly stands, but it’s also exciting to have this matchup right before the off-season.”

Longest Indoor Hard-Court Winning Streaks

Going back to their inaugural clash at the Rolex Paris Masters in 2021, Alcaraz has prevailed in their only encounter on indoor hard courts, winning that match 7-6(1), 7-5. He has triumphed in seven out of their nine hard court contests, including their most recent four-set final at the US Open.

How Alcaraz tackles Sinner’s serve, especially focusing on second serves, will be crucial in determining Sunday’s outcome. If Sinner adheres to his strengths, he will prioritize first-strike tennis against his formidable opponent. According to TDI Insights data, this season against all competitors, Sinner has clinched 57 percent of rallies with 0-4 shots—markably higher than Alcaraz’s 53 percent. Sinner also holds a similar advantage in extended rallies lasting nine shots or longer.

Alcaraz’s sweet spot is in the 5-8 shot range, where he has secured 57 percent of points against all opponents this year, with Sinner close behind at 54 percent.

With his career-high 71 wins—surpassing his previous best of 65 in 2023—Alcaraz is well ahead of Sinner (57), De Minaur (56), and Zverev (55).

Most Tour-Level Wins in 2025…

Alcaraz is striving to become the first player since Andy Murray in 2016 to clinch nine titles in a single season. Remarkably, back then, the Brit prevailed against Novak Djokovic in the Nitto ATP Finals title clash, which concluded year-end No. 1 title in a winner-takes-all scenario.

After his semi-final victory over Auger-Aliassime (6-2, 6-4), Alcaraz aims to make history as the first Spanish winner since Alex Corretja’s unexpected victory in 1998, also becoming just the third Spaniard overall to achieve this milestone (along with Manuel Orantes in 1976).

Salisbury Aims for Third Nitto ATP Finals Doubles Title
At 3 p.m. CET/9 a.m. ET, Joe Salisbury embarks on a quest for his third Nitto ATP Finals title alongside partner Neal Skupski, facing off against Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten.

Salisbury has triumphed in Turin in both 2022 and 2023, albeit without qualifying for last year’s event. Skupski is making his debut in the season-ending finale.

The duo has an impressive 46-21 record this season and is seeking their first title of 2025 together after reaching finals at Roland Garros and the US Open. In semi-finals, Salisbury and Skupski clinched a hard-fought victory, 6-7(3), 6-3, 10-8 against Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool, who recently secured the Year-End ATP Doubles No. 1 presented by PIF.

In a remarkable turnaround after a semi-final exit during their debut at last year’s prestigious event, Heliovaara and Patten advanced to the final with a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 victory against Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori.

The 36-year-old Heliovaara from Finland and 29-year-old Patten from Great Britain will strive for their eighth tour-level title as a team and their second indoor title of the year following their triumph at the Rolex Paris Masters earlier this month.
