Fernandez of Canada Claims Victory in Tokyo’s Pan Pacific Open Opener

Leylah Fernandez is on a winning streak in Japan!

The dynamic 23-year-old from Laval, Quebec, celebrated her fifth career singles title by triumphing at the Japan Open in Osaka last Sunday. On Monday night, she continued her success by defeating Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the first round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

The match lasted for an intense two hours and two minutes, with Fernandez clinching the victory 7-6 (5), 6-4.

During the match, the Canadian sensation showcased her skills with two spectacular aces, alongside one double fault. She recorded 47 unforced errors but also hit an impressive 32 winners. Fernandez successfully converted 58% of her first serve points and 50% on her second serve.

Defensively, she saved six out of 11 break points while capitalizing on six of her 10 break point opportunities.

In another matchup later on, Toronto’s Victoria Mboko was set to face off against Bianca Andreescu in an exciting all-Ontario showdown.
