Canada’s Leylah Fernandez’s journey at the Madrid Open came to an end as she fell to ninth-seeded Mirra Andreeva, with a scoreline of 7-6 (1), 6-3 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

In a gripping first set, Andreeva saved three set points before clinching the tiebreak and gaining momentum for the remainder of the match.

This matchup marked the third encounter between Fernandez, the 24th seed, and Andreeva, who now leads their rivalry 2-1.

Fernandez, hailing from Laval, Que., secured her spot in the quarterfinals after a convincing 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Ann Li in the round of 16.

She became only the second Canadian to reach the Madrid quarterfinals, matching her best result at a WTA 1000 event.

Andreeva, advancing to her inaugural Madrid semifinal, is set to face either the top seed Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus or the United States’ Hailey Baptiste.
