Leylah Fernandez’s journey at the Australian Open came to a swift conclusion this past Sunday, as the Canadian athlete, alongside her Ukrainian teammate Nadiia Kichenok, faced a tough defeat in the third round of the women’s doubles event.

In a match that lasted just 54 minutes, American Taylor Townsend partnered with Katerina Siniakova from Czechia to decisively eliminate Fernandez and Kichenok with a score of 6-3, 6-0.

Despite their efforts, the duo from Laval, Quebec, struggled to find their rhythm, failing to serve any aces and going 0-for-3 on breakpoints, ultimately winning only 14 service points and three service games.

In contrast, Townsend and Siniakova showcased their prowess with four aces, two double faults, and an impressive tally of 20 points won while receiving. They dominated the service game, winning 34 service points along with eight service games.

Earlier in the week, Fernandez also faced defeat in her singles match, where she lost to American star Coco Gauff, with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-2, on Friday.

On a brighter note, Gabriela Dabrowski from Ottawa and her partner Erin Routliffe from New Zealand advanced to the women’s doubles quarterfinals after a hard-fought victory over Germany’s Laura Siegemund and Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia, winning 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 in a match that spanned nearly 2.5 hours.

Although Dabrowski and Routliffe started off slowly, they gained momentum as the match unfolded, finishing with three aces and an outstanding 73% success rate on their first serves. They saved six of seven break points and earned 43 points while receiving.

Looking ahead, Dabrowski and Routliffe are set to face Miyu Kato from Japan and Renata Zarazua in the upcoming quarterfinals.
