Canada’s Leylah Fernandez, teaming up with Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina, faced an unfortunate exit from the D.C. Open women’s doubles tournament, falling in the first round on Tuesday.
The duo, seeded fourth, stumbled against China’s Tang Qianhui and Xu Yifan, losing the match 6-2, 6-4 in just 73 minutes.
The impressive Chinese pair capitalized on five out of nine break-point chances while managing to fend off four of six opportunities against them.
Next up, Tang and Xu will clash with the American legend Venus Williams and Russia’s Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Despite the doubles setback, Fernandez continues her title defense in the singles tournament.
The 23-year-old star from Laval, Que., is set to compete against the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala in the second round on Wednesday, after securing a straight-sets victory over Poland’s Magda Linette in her opening match on Monday.
