“That was the ‘inspired Felix’,” Auger-Aliassime remarked when reflecting on his performance. “I felt like I was playing at a rapid pace, yet everything seemed to unfold in slow motion for me. It’s an odd sensation during nights like these.”
“I’ve been striving to get to this level for a while, fine-tuning my game plan, and executing it effectively in a high-pressure match against a top opponent is quite different from practice. I’m thrilled with how I performed because it indicates that my hard work is paying off.”
This thrilling encounter bore significant weight in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, with Musetti, currently in eighth place, hoping to extend his lead over Auger-Aliassime, who sits at tenth. By triumphing over Musetti for his fifth win against a Top 10 player in 2025, Auger-Aliassime has narrowed the point gap to just 530 in their fight for a coveted Nitto ATP Finals berth.
Before arriving in Shanghai, Auger-Aliassime had impressive runs in Cincinnati and at the US Open, reaching the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively. He carried that momentum into his match against Musetti, delivering an impressive 24 winners, including seven aces, compared to Musetti’s 11.
The 25-year-old also successfully saved all three break points he encountered, according to Infosys ATP Stats, holding serve in 28 out of 29 instances across his three matches in Shanghai. After leveling their head-to-head record to 4-4, Auger-Aliassime has avenged his two previous losses to Musetti (at the Paris 2024 Olympics and Miami 2025).
