Felix Auger-Aliassime’s highly anticipated comeback to the Nitto ATP Finals took an unexpected turn on Monday as the Canadian faced calf troubles during a 7-5, 6-1 defeat to local favorite Jannik Sinner in Turin.

After starting strongly against the in-form Italian, Auger-Aliassime seemingly strained his left calf while landing from a serve at 5-6 late in the first set. Although he chose to continue the match, the injury visibly hindered his movement. However, the No. 8 player in the PIF ATP Rankings reassured fans that there was no cause for alarm.

“It’s not dangerous. I’m not worried,” Auger-Aliassime stated. “Credit to my opponent; he played exceptionally well. He was just better today. I’ll focus on getting ready for the next match.”

This marks Auger-Aliassime’s first appearance at the season finale since 2022. He put up a brave fight against Sinner during the initial phase of the match, yet the Italian quickly took control, winning 100% of his first serve points in that set according to Infosys ATP Stats.

“It’s always difficult to play against him, especially at this venue,” Auger-Aliassime noted, acknowledging Sinner’s skills. “He started strong and maintained that momentum throughout. He’s tough to beat here.”

Regardless of the physical setback, Auger-Aliassime emphasized his mental resilience. He maintains a balanced perspective on the nature of competition at such an elite event.

“I’m not afraid because this is not a life-or-death situation,” he conveyed when discussing his mentality against Sinner. “I approach it like a tennis battle; I stay focused and driven.”

“I’ve never feared a tennis match. Competing at this level requires discipline and precision from the very start.”

This match marked the fourth encounter between Auger-Aliassime and Sinner since August, during which the Italian has clearly established his superiority. Just a week prior to their showdown in Turin, they competed in the final of the Rolex Paris Masters, where Sinner emerged victorious once again, this time in two tightly contested sets.

“Having faced him several times this year, I had an idea of what to expect,” Auger-Aliassime stated. “At this elite level, you’ve got to be exceptionally good; that’s the reality.”

Despite the challenging start to his Turin campaign, Auger-Aliassime aims for a swift recovery from his calf issue as he prepares for upcoming round-robin matches against Ben Shelton on Wednesday and Alexander Zverev on Friday.
