SAN FRANCISCO — Roger Federer delighted a group of enthusiastic young players with dazzling trick serves and impressive between-the-legs shots during a special hitting session with the 20-time Grand Slam champion.
In town for the Laver Cup at the Chase Center this weekend, an event he proudly supports, Federer joined in the celebration of six newly renovated courts at John McLaren Park, part of the event’s Community Legacy Project that occurs at every location.
With an infectious grin, Federer exchanged strategies with Yannick Noah, who is set to lead Team Europe in the tennis showcase.
The Swiss icon thoroughly enjoyed his time rallying with the kids on Tuesday afternoon, expressing a longing to have played in a city he wishes he’d explored more throughout his illustrious career. He took time to sign autographs and snap selfies with fans, even sharing a few swings with San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie.
“Coming to a public park like this, spending time with the kids, inspiring them, and discussing tennis—it feels wonderful to see the positive impact of the Laver Cup being here,” expressed the 44-year-old tennis legend. “I’m thrilled to finally be back. My last visit in March was fantastic; everyone was so welcoming. It’s great to return.”
Having retired three years ago at 41, Federer couldn’t help but admire the distinctive black court at the Golden State Warriors’ arena, coupled with a desire to play on it.
“It looks truly special,” Federer remarked. “It’s a bit bittersweet—I really wish I could play here, as it would be an incredible venue. I even chatted with Tim Henman later and remarked how amazing it would be to compete on this court. Although I’ll miss it, I’ll soak in the experience as a fan.”
While Casper Ruud and others have already taken to the court for training, the fans can look forward to a formal practice day on Thursday that will showcase the tennis stars for the first time.
Patrick Rafter is eagerly anticipating the atmosphere in an arena typically dominated by stars like Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors. As an assistant captain for Team World, collaborating with Andre Agassi, he expressed his excitement.
“These are global superstars, and Stephen Curry is one of the biggest names,” Rafter noted. “It’ll be great to possibly meet them and spend time together. This venue is impressive, seating 18,000—didn’t realize it was that large. It’s going to be fantastic to play tennis here and watch everyone in action! Just witnessing the warm-ups has been an awesome experience.”
