The recent surge of Filipino fan support was evident as Alexandra Eala dazzled audiences with her remarkable journey to the semifinals at the Miami Open. Enthusiastic supporters rallied around her, both at the event and across the globe via social media.

It was a heartwarming spectacle to witness a rising star being celebrated so passionately by the tennis community.

During a recent virtual press conference hosted by BPI and Globe, Eala candidly discussed one significant hurdle she faces as a national representative: the complexities of visa processes linked to her Philippine passport.

“The real challenge lies in traveling with the adaptability that a tennis player requires,” Eala remarked last week. “As an athlete, flexibility in scheduling is crucial. Often, you’re left to make quick decisions, which can lead to a scramble for timely visa arrangements.”

It’s easy to comprehend the frustrations that accompany such limitations. The inability to make spontaneous entries into tournaments can be a significant setback, compounded by the overwhelming bureaucracy of visa applications.

As per GQ, the Philippine passport is ranked 75th on the Henley Passport Index, providing visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to just 69 countries and territories.

However, Eala’s love for representing her country remains unwavering, despite the hurdles.

“Without a doubt, it’s the immense support from the Pinoys that fuels me,” she expressed. “The sense of community is unique, and the love I’ve received this past month is a testament to that.”

The current World No. 72 is ready to shine again this week at the 125K tournament in Oeiras, Portugal, where she holds the title of top seed. In her opening match, Eala will take on Anouk Koevermans from the Netherlands.

Her journey continues as she gears up for the prestigious Madrid Open, scheduled for April 22 to May 4.
