Denis Shapovalov’s bounce-back week came to an unexpected conclusion.
The Canadian star fell to France’s Arthur Gea, with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-4 in the Los Cabos Open final on Saturday evening in Mexico.
At just 27 years old, Shapovalov clinched the ATP 250 hard-court title last year but stumbled in his opening match at the subsequent National Bank Open presented by Rogers in Toronto.
Heading into Montreal, he’s set to clash with Zachary Svajda from the U.S. in the first round of the prestigious Canadian ATP Masters 1000 event. Notably, Shapovalov hasn’t secured a win at the NBO since 2019.
The Richmond Hill, Ont. native saw his ranking dip to No. 68 prior to this tournament, following a challenging record of 9-14 in 2026. However, after reaching his 10th career final, he’s expected to ascend to No. 43.
Meanwhile, Gea, only 21, entered the event ranked 127th in the world, a position that denied him entry into the National Bank Open.
In the final, Gea impressively saved six out of seven break points, while Shapovalov managed to convert four of seven opportunities in a gripping match.
