Denis Shapovalov staged a remarkable comeback, overcoming a match point to triumph over American Marcos Giron with a score of 6-7 (3), 6-0, 7-6 (4) in the opening round of the Swiss Indoors on Tuesday.
The ninth-seeded Canadian had entered the match in Basel with a challenging history, having lost three out of their four previous encounters against Giron.
Facing match point while behind 30-40 at 5-6, Shapovalov delivered an impressive serve and went on to dominate the tiebreak, securing his victory against the world No. 57.
In this match, Shapovalov showcased his powerful serve, out-acing Giron 13 to 3, while also saving five out of seven break points.
Following a semifinal run at the Stockholm Open, the Richmond Hill, Ont. native is gaining momentum.
Next up for Shapovalov is a match against lucky loser Valentin Royer from France.
