LONDON — Iga Swiatek’s quest to defend her Wimbledon title came to a dramatic end on Saturday, falling to the remarkable 21-year-old Alexandra Eala in a gripping third-round match, 7-6 (9), 6-2. Eala continues to forge a path for Philippine tennis history.
With this victory, Eala becomes the first player from the Philippines, regardless of gender, to advance to the fourth round of a Grand Slam singles event.
In an emotional moment, Eala dropped to her knees and then lay back on the iconic Centre Court after landing a forehand winner on her third match point.
“It’s absolutely amazing to feel the support from my fellow countrymen. We’re all in this journey together,” she expressed during the on-court interview, glancing at the sea of Philippine flags waving in the stands.
“This is for them, for my family, and for all the little girls with ruffled socks and adorable chubby cheeks. It means everything to me,” she shared with heartfelt sincerity.
Swiatek, who captured her first Wimbledon title last year by defeating Amanda Anisimova with an astounding score of 6-0, 6-0 in the final, had hoped to defend her crown.
Having honed her skills at the Rafael Nadal Tennis Academy in Mallorca, Eala garnered international attention last year with her stunning run to the semifinals at the Miami Open.
