Daria Kasatkina Changes Citizenship, Now Competes for Australia

The former World No. 8 and currently ranked No. 12 revealed that her application for permanent residency in Australia has received approval, marking a significant milestone in her journey.

Originally from Togliatty, Russia, Kasatkina has shared her complex emotions regarding her native country’s political landscape. Since openly identifying as gay in 2022, she has reflected on the challenges faced in her homeland.

“My heart says yes, my brain says no,” she remarked when discussing the possibility for change in Russia last year.

“Australia has a special place in my heart; it is an incredibly welcoming environment where I feel completely at home,” Kasatkina stated on her social media. “I cherish my time in Melbourne and am eager to make it my permanent residence. With this, I am delighted to announce that I will be representing my new home, Australia, in my professional tennis career from this moment on.

“This decision has come with its challenges. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my family, coaches, and all those who have supported me throughout my tennis journey. While I will always hold pride in my roots, I am excited to embark on this new chapter of my life and career, now under the Australian flag.”
