The wait is finally over for Daniil Medvedev! After a lengthy absence from the winner’s circle lasting 882 days since his last victory in Rome, the 29-year-old showcased his skill at the Almaty Open, besting French rival Corentin Moutet—who was vying for his inaugural tour-level title.

Since his 2023 triumph in Italy, the former World No. 1 experienced a series of near-misses in finals, including those at the US Open, Beijing, Vienna, Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Halle. However, he turned the tide in Almaty, now standing as the second active male player to achieve 19 hard-court titles, trailing only Novak Djokovic (71).

In a thrilling showdown at the ATP 250 event, Medvedev effectively countered Moutet’s dazzling gameplay, seamlessly executing his flat groundstrokes to close out crucial points. After a grueling two hours and 29 minutes, he claimed the match with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, marking his 21st career title across various tournaments.

This victory not only ends Medvedev’s drought but also revives his aspirations for the Nitto ATP Finals. The former champion moves up three positions in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, now ranking 12th and trailing the eighth spot held by Lorenzo Musetti by 875 points—the final qualification position.

Every Victory Counts

Medvedev’s latest win in Almaty is a testament to his hard work with new coaches Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, following a strong performance in the semi-finals of both Beijing and Shanghai. The 29-year-old has recorded an impressive 12-3 win-loss record since beginning this collaboration post-US Open, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.

Meanwhile, Moutet aimed for glory in his third tour-level final, hoping to join the ranks of first-time winners in 2025. The Frenchman, who impressively didn’t drop a set on his journey to the final, moves up five spots to No. 36 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings and is set to achieve a career-high ranking on Monday.
