For Daniel Altmaier, eighteen days have been more than enough time to reflect on his last encounter with Jannik Sinner.
On Wednesday, Altmaier will be on a quest for swift retribution against the World No. 2 in the PIF ATP Rankings at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. This match marks their second clash in rapid succession, following Sinner’s 6-3, 6-3 victory on October 4 at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
“Honestly, I’m feeling optimistic,” Altmaier shared with ATPTour.com shortly after being matched up against Sinner, the top seed at ATP 500. “I thrive on the chance for revenge, and it always brings out my best performance. I’m eager for this matchup.”
“Competing against the big names means playing in front of large crowds. With many German supporters in Vienna, I can’t wait for the atmosphere!”
At 27 years of age, the World No. 51 Altmaier describes himself as a player in evolution. His hard work to diversify his skill set is evident in 2025, where he’s achieved a personal best of 18 tour-level victories, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. He aims to build on that record by securing his sixth Top 10 win against Sinner this Wednesday.
“I’m currently refining various playing styles to enhance my game,” explained Altmaier. “While one approach is aggressive, the other is more patient. The mental aspect is crucial as well, especially at the end of the year when challenges amplify. I’ll be collaborating with my team to determine the optimal tactics for our match and making adjustments as we progress.”

Altmaier understands what it takes to conquer Sinner; he defeated him at the 2023 Roland Garros in a grueling five-set match that spanned five hours and 26 minutes. This victory came just a few months prior to Sinner claiming his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Toronto, kicking off a remarkable winning streak.
Now just four places away from his career-high in the PIF ATP Rankings, Altmaier aims for a strong finish to the season on the indoor hard courts of Europe—capping off what has been a remarkable year, despite its obstacles.
