In a thrilling encounter at the Erste Bank Open, Corentin Moutet dealt a blow to Daniil Medvedev’s hopes of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals. Moutet avenged his recent loss to the 29-year-old by powering into the quarter-finals in Vienna.

Just a few days after falling to Medvedev in the Almaty final, the Frenchman showcased his diverse arsenal, edging a nail-biting first set and rallying back from a shaky moment while serving at 5-3, ultimately winning 7-6(3), 6-4.

“He’s an exceptional player, and I anticipated a tough match,” Moutet reflected. “The transition from Almaty was challenging due to the long travel, jet lag, and the intensity of the recent final. I’m thrilled with my performance today. I played with aggression, and while the conditions were different, it’s always a significant challenge facing Daniil.”

It All Adds Up

After claiming his first title in over two years in Almaty, Medvedev climbed to 12th in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. However, this recent defeat poses a significant hurdle for him. The 2020 season champion now finds himself 925 points behind eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti, who is also competing in Vienna this week. Medvedev’s next challenge is the ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris.

On equal terms at 2-2 in his head-to-head rivalry against Medvedev, Moutet will face Musetti in his fifth quarter-final of the season. Musetti, eager to make his debut in Turin, defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4.

Following the match between Moutet and Medvedev, Alexander Zverev swiftly reached a milestone, securing his 50th tour-level victory of the season by overcoming Italian qualifier Matteo Arnaldi with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in just 87 minutes. This marks Zverev’s fifth quarter-final appearance in Vienna, a venue where he has never exited before the last-eight stage.

Zverev, who clinched the title at the ATP 500 in 2021, has now reached 12 quarter-finals this year, with only Carlos Alcaraz (13) ahead of him in victories. The 28-year-old currently sits fourth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin and is edging close to his eighth berth at the Nitto ATP Finals. His next opponent in Vienna will be Tallon Griekspoor.

Players Achieving 50 Wins in 2025

In the day’s opener, Matteo Berrettini battled through to defeat Cameron Norrie 7-6(6), 6-7(9), 6-4, making his way into the quarter-finals in Vienna for the fourth time. He will face third seed Alex de Minaur next. Alexander Bublik also secured his place in the last eight, triumphing over Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 6-2. Bublik impressively saved all six break points against him, and has clinched four ATP Tour titles this year, as noted by Infosys ATP Stats.
