Daniil Medvedev believes that his Indian Wells semifinal rival Holger Rune stands out as one of the most versatile and talented young stars in tennis today.
Medvedev, a former world No. 1, acknowledges Rune’s comprehensive skill set, noting that his biggest hurdle is mastering the timing of his various shots.
In a thrilling quarterfinal match, Medvedev outlasted 20-year-old Arthur Fils with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(7) today.
Addressing the media at Indian Wells, Medvedev commended Rune’s gameplay, suggesting he possesses multiple options to choose from.
“His talent is truly exceptional; I would say he possesses nearly every shot you can execute in tennis,” Medvedev remarked. “He has a reliable slice, a deft dropshot, and is proficient at the net. His ability to vary spin and hit flat shots is impressive—he can serve effectively and deliver powerful kick serves. I genuinely believe he has the entire arsenal.”
“I wonder if having such a variety might sometimes be overwhelming for him, because when you have so many tools at your disposal, it could complicate things.”
The upcoming semifinal between Medvedev and Rune is a repeat of the 2024 Indian Wells quarterfinal, where Medvedev triumphed with a score of 7-5, 6-4. Medvedev’s latest title came from the 2023 Rome tournament, where he edged out Rune in the final with a score of 7-5, 7-5.
“We all recognize that Rune sometimes struggles with consistency at the start of tournaments, but once he finds his rhythm, he’s incredibly challenging to defeat,” Medvedev added. “I expect a tough match ahead. I need to be on my A-game, and I’m actively working towards that. I’m eager for the challenge.”
