Two talented Canadians are making strides in Hong Kong.

Leylah Fernandez and Victoria Mboko both claimed victories in the Round of 32 at the WTA 250 hard-court Open on Tuesday.

Fernandez, who recently triumphed at the Japan Open, dominated her match against China’s Wang Xiyu, securing a straight-sets win with scores of 6-1, 6-4.

The Montreal star, currently ranked 22nd on the tour, excelled by winning 72% of her first serve points and converting five of eight break-point chances. Her next challenge will be against the 44th-ranked German player, Eva Lys.

Meanwhile, Mboko showcased her resilience by overcoming Australia’s Talia Gibson in a thrilling three-set match, winning 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-4.

This 19-year-old, who captured the National Bank Open presented by Rogers during the summer, demonstrated her powerful serve, racking up 19 aces compared to Gibson’s three.

Next, she will face either Alexandra Eala from the Philippines or Katie Boulter from England.
