TOKYO — In a gripping showdown on Sunday, Canada succumbed to Japan with a close score of 2-1, marking the end of its four-year journey to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.

Both teams had previously triumphed over Romania, the only other competitor in their group, heightening the stakes as a win was essential for advancing to the Finals.

Instead of competing in the finals, Canada will shift its focus to the upcoming 2025 Playoffs in November, where they aim to secure a place in the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers.

“It was a challenging day filled with tight matches, but I truly believe it was a wonderful experience overall,” expressed Canadian captain Heidi El Tabakh.

“While we’re all feeling the sting of this loss, my pride in every single team member and their heart-felt effort today is immense. We fought till the very last moment; it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Canada’s rising star, 18-year-old Victoria Mboko, kicked off the tie with a hard-fought victory, overcoming Japan’s Ena Shibahara with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-7 (8), 7-5. This opening singles match, lasting two hours and 45 minutes, put second-ranked Canada ahead.

However, the 14th-ranked Japanese team quickly bounced back as Moyuka Uchijima secured a win against 20-year-old Canadian Marina Stakusic with a score of 6-3, 6-3.

In the crucial doubles match, Canadian pair Rebecca Marino and Kayla Cross battled hard but ultimately fell short, losing 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to Japan’s formidable duo of Shibahara and Shuko Aoyama.

“I am incredibly proud of Rebecca and Kayla for their performance tonight, taking on a highly experienced Japanese team comprised of some of the world’s top players,” said El Tabakh.
