Canada burst onto the scene at the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers in Japan, delivering a flawless performance against Romania on Friday.

In a stellar debut at the BJKC, 18-year-old Victoria Mboko clinched the first victory for Canada, overpowering Miriam Bianca Bulgaru with a score of 6-1, 6-4. This triumph marks another milestone in Mboko’s exceptional season, now boasting an impressive 29-2 record in all competitions.

“When I received the call to join the Billie Jean King Cup team in Japan, I was thrilled,” Mboko expressed in a Tennis Canada press release. “Having previously participated in the junior Billie Jean King Cup for Canada, being here now truly feels surreal. Securing my first win in front of the Canadian crowd makes it all the more special. Their support means the world to me, and I’m incredibly thankful for it.”

Following her lead, 20-year-old Marina Stakusic delivered another strong performance, defeating Anca Todoni with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Stakusic showcased her resilience by saving five out of six break-point chances against her while converting four out of her own eight opportunities. This victory enhances her BJKC record to 4-1.

In the doubles match, Rebecca Marino and Kayla Cross sealed the deal for Canada, triumphing over Georgia Andreea Craciun and Mara Gae with a score of 6-2, 6-4, completing the sweep.

Next on the agenda for Canada is an exciting showdown against host nation Japan slated for Sunday. Romania will face Japan on Saturday.

The champion of this trio’s clash will secure an automatic spot at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in China this September, while the remaining two teams will enter a playoff round for a shot at the finals.
