NEW YORK — Iga Swiatek isn’t the one in need of a break, but she playfully inquired if a reporter might be.
After her defeat to Amanda Anisimova in the U.S. Open quarterfinals, Swiatek challenged the reporter’s suggestion that she required a mental hiatus during a closing segment of her press conference on Wednesday.
This summer has been busy for Swiatek, who claimed the Wimbledon title—where she decisively beat Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 in the final—and also triumphed in Cincinnati just days before the U.S. Open, where she quickly transitioned to the mixed doubles tournament that followed.
When questioned about her fatigue, Swiatek remarked: “Well, I don’t really know. My matches here haven’t been particularly exhausting.”
The reporter then clarified he was referring to a mental break.
“You look like you could use a mental break,” Swiatek quipped.
When the reporter joked that he indeed needed one, Swiatek shot back: “Well then, why are you still here?”
He replied that he needed to stick around until the tournament wraps up on Sunday.
“Good luck,” Swiatek said with a smile.
