Bianca Andreescu has kicked off her journey towards the Wimbledon main draw with a promising victory.

The 26-year-old tennis star from Canada secured a straight-sets win in the opening round of qualifying, overpowering Slovenia’s Polona Hercog with a score of 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday.

Hailing from Burlington, Ont., Andreescu faced a setback in the second round of the French Open qualifiers last month. She aims to make her Grand Slam main draw debut since the 2024 US Open, a tournament she triumphed in back in 2019.

Next up, she will face Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann in the following round of qualifiers on Wednesday.

In addition, several other Canadian female players were in action on Tuesday.

Katherine Sebov triumphed in her qualifying match against Argentina’s Jazmin Ortenzi, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. She is set to compete against Noma Noha Akugue on Wednesday.

Sebov has had the honor of qualifying for a Grand Slam main draw just once, which was during the 2023 Australian Open.

On a different note, Canada’s Cadence Brace, Kayla Cross, and Carol Zhao were all eliminated in their respective qualifying matches.

On the men’s side, only one Canadian remains in contention, with Alexis Galarneau preparing to take on England’s Oliver Tarvet on Wednesday.
