Once a battleground for Matteo Berrettini, the Monte-Carlo Country Club has transformed into his playground.

In a stunning upset, Berrettini soared past top-seeded Alexander Zverev with a thrilling scoreline of 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, igniting the stands as the crowd erupted into chants of “Matteo! Matteo!” with fans bouncing joyfully in the aisles.

Despite a tense moment when he couldn’t serve out the match at 5-4, Berrettini found his resolve.

The former Wimbledon finalist triumphed in an electrifying 48-shot rally, culminating with Zverev doubled over, panting for air while Berrettini triumphantly raised his fist in a victorious salute to the roaring fans.

Reflecting on the decisive moments, Berrettini shared his gameplan: to fight fiercely and rally the crowd into a frenzy.

“I had to dig deep, especially mentally,” Berrettini explained. “I kept reminding myself to have faith in my shots and to enjoy the battle, particularly in that tricky third set.”

The thunderous support from the crowd fueled his determination, guiding him toward the finish line.

“The crowd’s energy is invaluable for us, especially for all the Italians,” Berrettini remarked. “It was special to hear them, and I aimed to make them scream even more. Their energy revitalizes you, especially when fatigue sets in.”

“So, a huge thank you to them and my team; their support played a significant role in turning this match around.”

Could this victory signal a turning point for Berrettini?

From a ranking of No. 154 last year to remarkable wins over reigning Olympic champion Novak Djokovic and former gold medalist Zverev this year, the ascent is undeniable.

Recalling a challenging chapter, Berrettini reflected on the moments when cheers haunted him from his hospital bed in Monte-Carlo.

“Three years ago, I was sidelined here, unable to move due to injury,” he recalled. “I could hear the fans from my apartment while I lay there. It was incredibly tough to endure.”

Fast forward to today, having the crowd chanting his name was a sweet melody that powered his comeback.

“Today was about enjoyment; I wanted to give them something to cheer for, which is how I found my energy in the third set,” Berrettini said.

Next up for Berrettini is a clash with either Davis Cup teammate Lorenzo Musetti or Jiri Lehecka.
