Ben Shelton punched his ticket to the Nitto ATP Finals on Thursday after reaching the quarter-finals at the Rolex Paris Masters, leaving just one spot open for the prestigious season-ending event in Turin.
This marks Shelton’s inaugural appearance at the year-end championships, capping off a remarkable season where he reached his second major semi-final and celebrated his first ATP Masters 1000 title.
With the inclusion of Shelton and Taylor Fritz, this marks the first time since 2006 that two American singles players will vie for the Brad Drewett Trophy, a feat achieved by James Blake and Andy Roddick back then, with Blake reaching the finals.
Shelton burst onto the scene at the start of 2025, notably reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open, where only eventual champion Jannik Sinner could halt his progress.
This formidable left-hander advanced to the Munich final in April and made waves in June, climbing into the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings—a distinguished honor he shares with tennis legends Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, and Roscoe Tanner as the fourth lefty from the USA to achieve this milestone since 1973.
However, his standout moment came in Toronto, becoming the youngest American to win a Masters 1000 title at just 22 years old, following in the footsteps of 21-year-old Roddick, who won in Miami in 2004.
Shelton will join tennis greats Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic, and Taylor Fritz in the Nitto ATP Finals lineup. Only two singles slots remain for the season finale, currently held by Alex de Minaur and Lorenzo Musetti in seventh and eighth places on the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin.
