HASSELT, Belgium — In an unexpected twist, Belgium powered through to the next round of Davis Cup qualifying on Sunday in a way no one could have predicted, as an accidental mishap involving Chile’s Cristian Garin created an unusual spectacle on the court.

As Belgium’s Zizou Bergs reveled in his victory of a game during the third set, jubilantly racing towards his bench, Garin was simultaneously navigating the tight spot between the net and the umpire’s chair. The ensuing collision led to Bergs inadvertently striking Garin in the right eye with his shoulder.

Immediately expressing concern, Bergs offered his apologies as Garin required medical attention. Later that day, the International Tennis Federation characterized the incident as “an accidental collision at the change of ends,” adding that an independent doctor determined Garin was fit to continue.

However, Garin opted not to resume play, prompting his team to request Bergs’ disqualification. Instead, Garin faced a series of three consecutive time violations, resulting in a game penalty that ultimately cost him the set and match without him even stepping back onto the court.

Bergs clinched the match with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, securing Belgium’s advancement to the next stage with a 3-1 victory. Their next challenge awaits against host Australia in September.

In a statement, the ITF described the incident as “a rare, unfortunate, and very delicate situation,” emphasizing that all involved, including the independent medical professional, acted within the framework of established rules and protocols. “We recognize the emotions surrounding this unusual occurrence, but the final decision was made after thorough consideration of all facts and specific circumstances surrounding the event,” they explained.

Chile’s Olympic committee expressed its dismay and disbelief on X, asserting that they would support the Chilean tennis federation in ensuring that “this disgraceful international incident does not go unpunished.”
