MELBOURNE — Felix Auger-Aliassime from Montreal triumphed in his opening match of the Australian Open, dominating Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff with a score of 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 on Monday.
The 29th seed, fresh off his triumph at the Adelaide International — marking his sixth ATP title — showcased exceptional control, unleashing 19 aces compared to Struff’s 15 and remarkably committing only one double fault while Struff racked up four. Auger-Aliassime claimed an impressive 85 percent of his first-serve points and managed to break Struff’s serve eight times.
Looking ahead, Auger-Aliassime is set to battle Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round.
Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo will make his debut in the Australian Open main draw later tonight against Italy’s Luca Nardi, while Denis Shapovalov from Richmond Hill will take on Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut early Tuesday.
In women’s singles action, Vancouver’s Rebecca Marino is scheduled to compete against Britain’s Katie Boulter in the first round.
Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Quebec, is set to partner with Ukraine’s Nadiia Kichenok to face the Australian duo of Talia Gibson and Maya Joint in women’s doubles. Meanwhile, Ottawa’s Gabriella Dabrowski, alongside New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe, the second seeds, will challenge the American pair of Danielle Collins and Desirae Krawczyk in their opening match.
