Montreal’s own Felix Auger-Aliassime made a stellar run into the next stage of the men’s singles competition at the esteemed Rolex Shanghai Masters on Monday.
Auger-Aliassime triumphed over the Netherlands’ Jesper de Jong with a scoreline of 6-4, 7-5 in the round of 32.
This victory marks a continuation of success for the Quebec native, who last defeated de Jong back in February during the semifinals of the Open Occitanie in Montpellier, France.
Meanwhile, Richmond Hill’s Denis Shapovalov faced disappointment as he was ousted by Jiri Lehecka from Czechia, falling 6-4, 6-4.
Ranked 12th, Auger-Aliassime is set to face the eighth-seeded Lorenzo Musetti, who overcame fellow Italian Luciano Darderi with a score of 7-5, 7-6 (1).
In another exciting match-up, Gabriel Diallo from Montreal has also advanced to the round of 16 and will battle Belgium’s Zizou Bergs on Tuesday.
In a surprising twist, third-seeded Alexander Zverev fell to 54th-ranked Arthur Rinderknech, losing 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the third round of the Shanghai Masters.
Zverev, the highest-ranked player remaining in the tournament, initially appeared dominant after taking the first set but stumbled as Rinderknech capitalized with breaks in the second and third sets to secure the match in over two hours.
This isn’t the first time Rinderknech has bested Zverev; he previously defeated him in five sets during the first round at Wimbledon this year.
“This is monumental for me,” Rinderknech expressed. “Winning against a top-5 player at a Grand Slam at Wimbledon was thrilling, and now I’ve done it again. I always have to bring my absolute best to compete against someone as established as Sascha.”
In earlier rounds at Shanghai, Zverev sought treatment for a toe injury before defeating Valentin Royer in straight sets.
Thirty-year-old Rinderknech is having a remarkable year, boasting a career-high 23 wins in 2025, marking his third time into the fourth round at a Masters 1000 event.
His next challenge will be against Lehecka.
Earlier, seventh-seeded Alex De Minaur triumphed over Kamil Majchrzak 6-1, 7-5 in the sweltering heat, securing his impressive 36th victory on hard courts this year.
The 26-year-old De Minaur showcased his skill, breaking Majchrzak’s serve five times and reaching the fourth round of the Masters 1000 for the seventh time this season.
“I anticipated the tough conditions this week,” De Minaur stated. “The key is to adapt, survive, and prepare for battles. There are no easy matches here, especially given the weather, so I’m proud to have regrouped, earned the break back, and closed it out in two.”
De Minaur’s next opponent will be Nuno Borges, who won against Shang Juncheng 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3. A victory here would mark De Minaur’s first season of reaching 50 wins at the tour level.
Defending champion Sinner had to retire against Tallon Griekspoor on Sunday while trailing 7-6 (3), 5-7, 2-3 due to cramps.
Also notable, top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz, fresh off a win at the Japan Open last week, is absent from Shanghai due to minor health concerns.
In other news, American Learner Tien defeated Cameron Norrie 7-6(4), 6-3.
