Andrey Rublev has always been forthcoming regarding his mental health journey. As a prominent figure in tennis, Rublev has faced significant psychological challenges but serves as an inspiring example for others, continually striving for personal growth through his experiences.
After enduring a personal and professional low, including an infamous default at a Dubai match due to an on-court outburst, Rublev now celebrates the impressive progress he has made.
Before each match, he writes “responsibility” on his shoe, a simple yet powerful reminder of a key principle.
“Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what happens in my life; it’s all on me, no one else,” Rublev shares. “I try to remind myself not to complain.”
Rublev emphasizes that everything is interconnected. “Balance is crucial. If you’re not in harmony with yourself, everything else falls apart.”
Breaking Free from Darkness
Reflecting on his deep struggles, Rublev recounted his descent into depression and self-doubt over several years, crediting conversations with former World No.1 Marat Safin as pivotal to his recovery.
“I felt trapped in a cycle, lost within myself for years, uncertain of my direction or purpose,” he confided. “It might sound dramatic, but I was completely adrift, feeling void of purpose.”
He acknowledged the weight of enduring hardship over time: “When months turn into years, patience runs thin. It feels like a pain that continues to escalate, the only thought being to cut it off entirely. It was overwhelming.”
While he experimented with antidepressants, Rublev ultimately decided they weren’t leading to the change he sought.
“I just stopped taking them, and that was my choice,” he explained.
Marat Safin then played a crucial role in helping Rublev confront his inner self. “With his guidance, I started to understand myself better. It was a pivotal experience, a fresh start from the depths of despair. Gradually, I began to move toward a more positive path.”
It’s fitting that Rublev is now capturing ATP titles again. His bravery in sharing his struggles publicly inspires many, whether they face similar challenges openly or internally.
Paula Badosa, who has also been open about her mental health battles, expressed admiration for Rublev on social media.
“So much respect for you,” she commented in response to a video of his press conference. “Hearing your story moves me deeply. I know the pain well. In the end, this will only empower you. I’m so glad you’re feeling better. Thank you for speaking out.”
Andrey Rublev: I was just kind of in a loop, lost with myself for a couple of years, not finding the way, not understanding what to do, what for? Sounds a bit dramatic, like what’s the reason or purpose to live? I don’t know, just completely lost with myself (…) pic.twitter.com/b7x4PpP3F4
