Bianca Andreescu is currently on the mend following an unexpected emergency appendectomy, with her sights set on a remarkable comeback during the clay-court season in spring.

The 2019 US Open champion took to social media to share the news of her sudden surgery, which has unfortunately sidelined her from the upcoming Merida Open in Mexico later this month.

Known for her creativity and versatility on the court, Andreescu has faced various injuries in recent years. She last competed in October, reaching the quarterfinals in Tokyo before falling to Katie Boulter with a score of 6-2, 6-1.

As the 130th-ranked Canadian athlete continues her recovery, her highly anticipated return is slated for spring.

“My training was going extraordinarily well, and I was looking forward to the Merida Open as my season opener for 2025,” Andreescu expressed on social media. “Unfortunately, I began to experience some sharp abdominal pains, prompting an emergency appendectomy.”

“The procedure was a success, and I’m already on the path to recovery. My goal is to return to the court rejuvenated for the clay season. Thank you all for your continued support—I can’t wait to compete again!”

The Merida Open will take place from February 24 to March 2.

In her previous season, Andreescu battled her way to the final at ‘s-Hertogenbosch on grass, where she narrowly lost to Liudmila Samsonova, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7. She then broke a five-match losing streak with her strong performance in Tokyo last October.
