TOKYO — In a thrilling Japan Open finale, the top seed Carlos Alcaraz triumphed over fifth-ranked Taylor Fritz with a score of 6-4, 6-4, securing his eighth singles title this year.

Alcaraz celebrated his 24th career singles victory in style, finishing with a perfectly executed sliced drop shot winner, avenging his recent two-set loss to Fritz at the Laver Cup.

With this win, the Spaniard’s impressive season record improved to an exceptional 67-7, keeping his hopes alive for the coveted year-end No. 1 ranking.

“This has undoubtedly been my finest season,” Alcaraz expressed. “It reflects the dedication I’ve put in to relish these moments and fulfill my ambitions.”

The Tokyo final marked Alcaraz’s ninth consecutive appearance in a championship match since March, when he faced an early exit in the round of 64 at the Miami Masters. He holds a formidable 7-2 record in those finals, including a gripping match at Wimbledon against Jannik Sinner.

Reflecting on the year’s journey, Alcaraz admitted, “I didn’t start the season on a high note and went through emotional challenges. I take pride in my comeback and in the support of those who have helped me reach this stage.”

Meanwhile, Fritz requested a medical timeout after the first set to tend to his left thigh, which was noticeably strapped during a changeover in the second set.
