TOKYO — Carlos Alcaraz, nursing an ankle injury, staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Sebastian Baez 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the Japan Open on Thursday.

The top-ranked player admitted he felt a wave of fear when he tumbled in the first set. Alcaraz was seen rubbing his eyes, clearly struggling with discomfort in his left ankle.

“When I landed on my ankle, I was really concerned, as it didn’t feel right at first,” Alcaraz explained. “But I’m thrilled that I managed to play well afterward and concluded the match strongly.

“I’m focused on recovering and will do whatever it takes to be fully prepared for the next match.”

Alcaraz needed ankle strapping before he could continue, ultimately advancing to the third round.

“I was anxious about my ability to finish the match, but the physio came over and conducted some assessments,” he shared. “It was reassuring to walk back to the bench, and that boosted my confidence. I’m committed to maintaining a warrior spirit in every match and every situation.”
