It took Carlos Alcaraz three long years to secure his first victory at the Nitto ATP Finals. Three years filled with experiences, adapting to a new format, and realizing that slow starts are not an option in Turin.
This Sunday, when he triumphed over Alex de Minaur in his debut match, the Spaniard finally achieved the successful start he desired in this prestigious event, gathering the season’s top eight players.
“Starting the tournament with a victory feels amazing; it gives you a tremendous confidence boost for the upcoming matches,” shared the six-time Grand Slam champion.
Admitting to some initial nerves – a common feeling with the pressure of the first match at the Nitto ATP Finals – Alcaraz expressed satisfaction in kicking off with a win at a tournament where every detail can be crucial. “Winning a match here indicates you’ve played exceptionally well, reflecting a high level of play,” noted the 22-year-old.
“This is my first victory in a first match after three years here. I’m delighted about that. I aim to enhance the minor aspects I didn’t execute well today. I’m incredibly motivated for the upcoming challenges.”
In 2023, during his tournament debut, Alcaraz faced a loss against Alexander Zverev. The following year, he faced a similar fate against Casper Ruud. However, in 2025, he successfully navigated a tough opener against De Minaur, a win celebrated with his arms raised in triumph. He has finally begun the season finale on the right foot.
Alcaraz’s reflection on the match delved into technical nuances. In Turin, where the indoor court speed is remarkable, he noted a contrast to his previous tournament in Paris. “The speed of the court here is much quicker, leaving no room to apply spin or topspin, making it challenging to create angles. In Paris, we had more time to maneuver, resulting in longer rallies and bigger dynamics. While the balls are similar, the speed of the court allows for more impactful plays.”
With a mix of detailed insights and unwavering ambition, the World No. 2 made it clear: he won’t be complacent in Turin, nor will he prioritize one goal over another. When asked whether he preferred to secure victory here or at the Davis Cup next week in Malaga, his response was predictably ambitious: “Why not strive for both? There’s no need to choose one when both are within reach!”
“While I have many years ahead to compete in the Davis Cup, as it’s an annual event, I hope to represent Spain for years to come. But this year, and every year moving forward, I’ll fight for victories at both fronts.”
With his opening win at this year’s Nitto ATP Finals under his belt, Alcaraz feels increasingly at ease on the court. Most importantly, he senses that the valuable lessons learned from this tournament, which he often found challenging, are finally bearing fruit.
