In an unexpected twist, tennis legends Andre Agassi and Patrick Rafter, known for their fierce battles on the court, are now poised to lead Team World at the Laver Cup.

As captain, Agassi steps up to replace John McEnroe, while the charismatic Rafter joins him as vice captain, marking a fresh chapter in Laver Cup leadership. Team Europe will now be led by the dynamic Yannick Noah, succeeding the iconic Bjorn Borg.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t have taken on this role if Pat hadn’t agreed to join me,” Agassi revealed to ATPTour.com. “I specifically thought, ‘He’s the perfect fit for this.’ Pat is not just a phenomenal player; he’s a remarkable athlete and competitor.”

Agassi and Rafter share a storied rivalry, having faced off 15 times from 1993 to 2001, with Agassi claiming victory in 10 encounters. Fast forward over two decades, and their camaraderie will shine brightly in San Francisco.

“When I lost to Pat, I could find comfort in knowing he was the one who won,” Agassi reflected. “His respect for fellow players was always evident on and off the court, and partnering with him now is a tremendous honor.”

Rafter reciprocated the sentiment, stating, “When Andre reached out to me, I was thrilled. I make it a point to connect with him yearly, which is rare among us former players. The respect I have for him runs deep. This opportunity is simply amazing—I feel incredibly fortunate.”

Following a narrow 13-11 defeat last year, Team World seeks to claim its third Laver Cup title (after victories in 2022 and 2023) with the guidance of these seasoned champions.
