In an exciting match at the Eastbourne Open, Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo triumphed over Argentina’s Tomas Etcheverry, securing his place in the quarterfinals with a score of 6-7 (11), 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday.
Diallo showcased his powerful serve, firing off 14 aces and successfully defending against the only break point he encountered, while converting an impressive 86% of his first service points.
Although fourth-seeded Etcheverry delivered 10 aces, he struggled with three breaks on 12 opportunities.
With this victory, Diallo has now established a 2-0 record against Etcheverry.
Diallo has reached his first quarterfinal of the season and is set to face former world No. 4 Jack Draper from Britain in the ATP 500 grass-court event next.
On the women’s doubles side, Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani advanced to the semifinals, defeating Japan’s Miyu Kato and Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (5).
The top-seeded duo of Dabrowski and Stefani will next challenge Hungary’s Fanny Stollar and America’s Asia Muhammad.
