It’s yet another frustrating outcome for Leylah Fernandez of Canada.
The 23-year-old, hailing from Laval, Quebec, faced a straight-sets defeat against China’s Wang Xinyu in the second round of the Bad Homburg Open on Tuesday, with scores of 6-3 and 6-4.
After bouncing back with a first-round victory on Sunday, following a tough stretch of three consecutive losses, Fernandez struggled to keep the momentum going, committing six double faults compared to Xinyu’s three.
Xinyu is set to clash with the winner of the match between Liudmila Samsonova and Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals.
Fernandez has secured her position as the No. 22 seed for Wimbledon, which kicks off next Monday. The Bad Homburg Open serves as a preparatory event for the prestigious grass court Grand Slam.
Meanwhile, Victoria Mboko from Burlington, Ontario, currently ranked ninth in the world, will unfortunately miss Wimbledon due to a medial collateral ligament tear in her left knee sustained during the HSBC Championships earlier this month.
The main draw for Wimbledon singles is scheduled for Friday.
