In a display of focus and finesse, Jannik Sinner stepped onto the court early Tuesday morning at the Mutua Madrid Open. The world’s top player in the PIF ATP Rankings launched Day 7 of the ATP Masters 1000 event with a decisive fourth-round victory over Cameron Norrie.

The showdown commenced at Manolo Santana Stadium just after 11 a.m. local time, where the Italian maestro claimed a swift win in 87 minutes, closing the match at 6-2, 7-5—a first-ever clash in the Lexus ATP Head2Head series. With this win, the 24-year-old Sinner extends his remarkable streak to 20 consecutive tour-level victories and an impressive 25-match winning run at the Masters 1000 level.

Regarding his early match routine, Sinner commented, “It’s quite unusual for me. I can’t recall when I last played at 11 a.m., but it doesn’t matter to me. I strive to perform my best… We have to adapt mentally and physically. I felt good today.”

Looking ahead, Sinner is geared up for a quarter-final showdown against the rising #NextGenATP star Rafael Jodar or Vit Kopriva. After clinching titles in Paris last November and at Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo this year, he’s striving to become the first player ever to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles.

In a display of his skills, Sinner was laser-focused, particularly in a first set where he faced no break points, as highlighted by Infosys ATP Stats. The only moment of tension came when he had a break up at 3-2 in the second set, where a rare slip in concentration allowed Norrie to recalibrate.

Despite Norrie’s resurgence, the Brit was unable to hold off Sinner’s assault, serving at 5-5. After a double fault at 15/30, Norrie managed to save two break points but faltered on a third, allowing Sinner to seal the victory and etch his name alongside Novak Djokovic as only the second player in history to win the first 20 Masters 1000 matches of a season.

Reflecting on his debut against Norrie, Sinner noted, “We know each other quite well from practicing together at past tournaments, so we both knew what to expect. I believe my serve was solid during crucial moments.”

“This surface is quite unique compared to others, making it tricky to gauge performance. Sometimes you feel off, yet it looks good from the stands, or vice versa. However, I’m thrilled to reach the quarters once again.”

Another player on an impressive winning streak, Arthur Fils, also progressed to the quarter-finals early on Tuesday. The French talent, who claimed his first ATP Tour title since 2024 last week at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4, marking his eighth consecutive victory.

Fils is set to compete against sixth seed Lorenzo Musetti or 11th seed Jiri Lehecka in the next round. The 21-year-old, who sidelined for eight months in 2025 due to a back injury, now boasts a 21-5 record for the season and has climbed seven spots to No. 18 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings thanks to his current momentum in Madrid.
