Roberto Bautista Agut has revealed that the curtain is about to fall on his illustrious career. The Spaniard, a fixture on the ATP Tour for two decades, announced his intentions to retire at the conclusion of the upcoming season. Throughout his journey, he spent an impressive 27 weeks in the Top 10 of the PIF ATP Rankings, with his highest achievement being ranked World No. 9.

“For years, I’ve been living out a dream. I’ve put my heart and soul into every practice and match,” Bautista Agut shared. “Now, I feel it’s time to bid farewell, to relish every tournament anew, and to close this chapter of my life full of appreciation for the wonderful sport that is tennis.”

At the age of 37, the Castellon native has carved a unique path in tennis, distinguished by his powerful baseline game. This versatility has enabled him to notch titles on hard, clay, grass, and indoor courts alike. In total, Bautista Agut boasts 12 ATP Tour titles, with his first victory coming at the grass-court event in ‘s-Hertogenbosch back in 2012. His success on grass, particularly at Wimbledon, where he reached the semifinals in 2019, is noteworthy.

Nonetheless, hard courts have been his playground for triumph, racking up nine titles from events in Auckland, Sofia, Chennai, Winston-Salem, Dubai, and more. He also claimed victories on clay in Stuttgart and Kitzbuehel.

“I’m determined to be present until the very last point of the year,” Bautista Agut stated regarding his final days on the ATP Tour. “I wish to feel the love of the crowd, to compete one last time in the tournaments that have defined my career, and to say goodbye on the court, where I have always found my happiness.”

In the course of his career, Bautista Agut has participated in over 700 tour-level matches, recording a commendable 435-297 win-loss record. His professional journey kicked off in Valencia, with his debut match in 2009 against fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes; however, it wasn’t until 2012 that he celebrated his first victory.

His first ATP Tour triumph occurred at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Miami, defeating Andreas Seppi, and marking a watershed moment as he entered the Top 100 for the first time on August 13, 2012.

While he may not have anticipated this ending, he exits the stage with pride, having established himself as one of Spain’s premier players over the last two decades.
